We are pleased to announce the update release of PocketWeather V2.1.0

Summary of major changes to PocketWeather V2.1.0:

SmartPhone Home Screen Plugin

Finally, Windows Mobile SmartPhone/Standard device owners can now enjoy having the weather displayed on their homescreens!

All the features previously only available to the PPC/Classic/Professional Windows Mobile devices are now available on the SmartPhone/Standard.

Today Screen Gesture Support

PPC/Classic/Professional Windows Mobile Today Screen now supports gestures for quickly changing locations.

To view a YouTube video, click here.

Tap and drag left, right, up or down to change locations.

Note that if you have PocketWeather running within PocketBreeze, the default PocketBreeze configuration is to support horizontal gestures to change views. So you might accidentally cause PocketBreeze to change view when performing a horizontal tap and drag. To overcome this, PocketWeather supports smaller motions - that is, you only need to tap and drag a small distance to cause the change. Alternatively, you can tap and drag vertically.

Diagonal gestures are also supported - no screen animation is activated, but instead it is as if you pressed the D-Pad to go left or right.

GPS (WM5/6 PPC only)

If your Windows Mobile 5/6 PPC device has built-in GPS, or is configured to use an external GPS unit, PocketWeather can make use of this to automatically add locations closest to your current position.

Note that to use the GPS functionality, you must first enable access to the GPS unit from within the Windows Mobile Settings/System/External GPS configuration screen.

Once enabled in the PW Options/General/GPS configuration screen...

...additional options area in the "Locations" menu appear.

Another option is to automatically add/update locations on every PocketWeather update with the closest available location. The newly added location is automatically configured as the [Home] location, and the current weather automatically downloaded (subject to update and internet access configurations).

If you enable the Google Terrain images for the newly added location, when viewed in WeatherConsole under the METAR Map, PocketWeather will display the last GPS position using a Blue Cross

GPS support is only available on WM5/6 PPC/Classic/Professional devices, and is currently not supported on WM2003, or SmartPhone/Standard devices. We hope to be able to improve that in the future.

Location Specific Layouts for Today/Home Screen

For each location on the today/home screen, you can lock the selected layout so that each time you go to that location, it will automatically load the previously selected layout, irrespective of whatever layout all the other views are using by default.

A new menu option is available. Enabling that causes that location's select of layouts to be fixed, and independent of the default layout.

So while all the locations use the default view...

you can now fix the layout for a specific view...

Complete list of changes to PocketWeather V2.1.0:

Layout Scripting

* Layout scripts - fixed "NOT" operator handling - now works properly.
* Layout scripts - ";DEBUGEX" option now outputs line numbers too.
* Layout scripts - improved recovery from bad skin layout file - as well as detection/reporting
* Layout scripts - fixed forecast recursion with horizontal spacing of 0 - was defaulting to automatic horizontal spacing
* fixed ";CURRENT" with no options resulting in subsequent objects being off-screen
* fixed "#HIGHLOW" displaying blank if either the high or low temperature was missing
* fixed ";subview" with touch area being applied in wrong order, resulting in any touch areas in subview being overridden
* update - increased number of UserText variables from 3 to 10

PW Options

* "PWS" (PocketWeather Settings configuration) and "PWL" (PocketWeather Location configuration) files are now associated with PW Options, so launching either a .pws or .pwl will automatically import the file into PocketWeather (after user confirmation).
* Improved scheduled update handling using the Windows Mobile System Scheduler to improve reliability
* Fixed device KeepAlive to improve keeping the device awake during key update processes.
* Added "Fully Awake" option for scheduled updates.
* Google has changed the way its satellite maps are access. PocketWeather has been updated to now access the Google Terrain maps.
* Fixed Import of GPS settings

Today Screen (PPC/Classic/Professional only)

* Improved Today screen rendering handling
* PPC Today screen now supports "gestures" to change Locations, viz. swiping left or down changes to next Location; swiping right or up changes to previous Location. Note that when PW is used as a tab within PocketBreeze, a left or right long swipe will change PB views - PocketWeather responds to short swipes.
* WindArrows - changed low and medium WindArrow colors (colours) to be green (low/light - < 10mpg) and yellow (medium < 30mpg) respectively.
* Added Locking layout script for specific location
* If icons reside on external memory card, and the card is missing/removed/not ready, was previously resetting icons back to default. Now temporarily resets and does not store updated icons.

WeatherConsole

* Improved startup response and speed.
* METAR Map view how displays a Blue Cross to indicate the current GPS position. Note that this only occurs when within range, and GPS is enabled.

Updating

* Weather alerts - on occasions when multiple alerts for a single location are triggered, PW now breaks these up into smaller individual alerts so that they can be read easier...
* TimeZone Updates - the handling of TimeZones has been rewritten to make use of built-in timezone updating support in the Windows Mobile devices - changes in daylight saving time should now happen automatically and reliably. This requires that the appropriate Windows Mobile Daylight Saving Time patch be installed - see here. Note that with RC1, existing locations already configured in PocketWeather will not automatically be updated, so you will need to manually go into each location, modify the location name and back again to ensure its configuration is suitably updated. We hope to make this automatic for the next RC.
* Improved response to changes in device's network connectivity
* Weather Feeds - fixed handling of weather feed templates that only provide day of weeks - was failing on Saturday/Sunday wrap-around
* Weather Feeds - Added mad wind speed checking in METAR - if wind is in excess of 150 knots, PW reports and ignores
* Earthquakes - increased maximum number of earthquakes stored from 50 to 200.
* update - increased number of userText from 3 to 10
* fix - weather templates were not always recording userText and useralert messages
* update - locations now automatically updated with appropriate timezone id (an internal configuration)

General

* Languages - added Thai (finally) and Norwegian.
* for the home location, when you go to Heavens-Above site (using the menu), it uses your real location (including GPS if at Home Location) - so more accurate satellite predictions...
* Changed PW logo to use PNG file instead of BMP file to save space. Now PW Today screen startup displays logo.
* Fixed issue with external memory card causing graphics resource files to become locked and unusable, resulting in blank displays. <tech - warning>This issue was typically seen on devices where PocketWeather was installed on external memory (etc SD) cards. When the device is "off" (in standbye mode, screen off), the device automatically powers down everything to save power, and resets access to the external memory card. Now because PocketWeather is making use of images store on the memory card, when the device is turned back on, the operating system resets any file handles to the memory card, thereby breaking access to the images. But a side effect was that PocketWeather's image store/DLL would become locked into memory until every PocketWeather component reset its access to the image store/DLL - until then, no images could be access. This fix enables PocketWeather to recover from this situation without requiring a soft-reset.
* WeatherTemplate editor - was missing visibility and visibility units output
* WeatherTemplate editor - application can now be resized
* Download statistics - "Today" now changes at midnight local time
* A lot of other improvements, bug fixes and other enhancements have been included which cannot be listed here.

PC/Win32 version of PocketWeather

This is the first time we have made the PocketWeather for PC publicly available.

The behaviour and features are pretty much identical to those available on the PPC/Classic/Professional devices. The one exception is that the PC version includes a "Force VGA", "Force SP QVGA" option in PW Options/General to enable a larger display for testing VGA and SmartPhone QVGA layouts.

The PC version also requires a registration key, otherwise it will expire after 14 days, like on the PPC/SP. You can use your existing PPC/Classic/Professional or SP/Standard username/key.

Note that PocketWeather for PC is provided as-is, and as an aid to layout skin and weather template developers.

The background for the "PocketWeather" application now displays "today.jpg" or "today.png" as the background image. The file MUST be in "bmp\default" under where PocketWeather is installed.

Out of interest, I managed to install and run PocketWeather for PC on my UBuntu Linux desktop using Wine! clap1.gif

Okay - can you enable debug logging, make it go wrong (change landscape to portrait to landscape), then send/post the pw_today.log file.

Thanks,

Adrian

Which ever does not work. Also, if you could make a note of the time you made the change, and which direction, that would be helpful.

Thanks,

Adrian

When are the developers solving the old sky mapping errors please?

First of all, congrats for this great new release. clap1.gif

Unfortunately, the errors reported 4 months ago in this thread weather.com and PW: different icon meaning and reminded in this thread PocketWeather 2.1.0 Release Candidate 1 remain unsolved in PocketWeather 2.1.0.

Here are the facts (example Monday Nov. 10):

www.weather.com
Attached File  WC.jpg (25.02K)
Number of downloads: 7

PocketWeather 2.1.0
Attached File  PW_device.jpg (15.88K)
Number of downloads: 5

PocketWeather 2.1.0 PC
Attached File  PW_PC.jpg (29.59K)
Number of downloads: 7

As you can see, the latest version of PW displays a wrong forecast for Monday Nov. 10, showing "Rain" (in icon an text) instead of the "sun and rain" icon 39 and the corresponding text "Showers", translated to "Averses" in French, as provided by weather.com. The same kind of errors happen in any "sun and rain" sky combination, "T-Showers" and probably all possible combinations of "AM ………." and "PM ………." conditions. My forecast setting is the default "Automatic". Changing template or language (dll) doesn't solve it. benkc confirmed the problem when he tried it on his device.

Many other users must have have the same issue, without noticing it or ignoring that this problem comes from PW and not from wrong forecast source data provided by www.weather.com.

Other users, please help and answer these questions: smile.gif
1) Did you ever have any "sun and rain" conditions displayed by PocketWeather with this icon Attached File  icon_39.jpg (2.1K)
Number of downloads: 2 or never?
2) When comparing the source forecast data for your city on this site www.weather.com for the above highlighted sky conditions, is it the same as displayed by PocketWeather or are there any differences? If yes, please describe and/or attach image. Thank you in advance for your help.

Developers
I) What is your solution please?
II) When can I expect it?

Thanks in advance for your support.
